How Spinal Decompression Heals Herniated Discs Issues

Written By ChiroConcepts of McKinney on April 16, 2018

Pain caused by herniated discs can be excruciating and difficult to treat but many of our clients have received considerable relief using spinal decompression.

At ChiroConcepts of McKinney, we use The Chattanooga Triton DTS package to give our clients the best possible chance of recovery from this painful condition.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

The term herniated disc is slightly misleading as the pain you experience from this condition does not come from the disc itself. The pain is, in fact, nerve pain that comes from the substance that leaks out of the disc. This substance (nucleus pulposus) irritates the nerves next to your spine.

A herniated disc may also be referred to as a pinched nerve or bulging disc, depending on which term the practitioner prefers. A physically demanding job, obesity, or aging can lead to herniated discs.

How Does Spinal Decompression Heal Herniated Discs?

The goal with non-surgical spinal decompression is to relieve pain and speed up the healing process. This is achieved by stretching and relaxing the spine to manipulate the nucleus pulposus back to its original state.

During treatment, the patient lies on a traction table, fully clothed, while a computerized system performs the stretching and relaxing process, according to our Chiropractor’s instruction. The treatment is not painful and both you and the table can be adjusted at any time during the procedure. Sessions usually last between 30 and 45 minutes and patients can attend weekly.

Is There Evidence That Shows Spinal Decompression Works for Herniated Discs and Other Conditions?

A study conducted in 2010 and published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information website found that in the participants, lower back pain reduced from 6.2 to 1.6 in severity. The study concluded that the lower back pain had reduced because the height of the disc had increased due to the spinal decompression treatment. Of the 30 study participants, 21 were female and 9 were male, and the average age was 65 years.
