Worried About the Safety of Chiropractic Treatment?

Written By ChiroConcepts of McKinney on May 16, 2018

Concern about the safety of chiropractic care is natural if you’ve never experienced this kind of treatment before. The team at ChiroConcepts of McKinney understands your concerns and they’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.

What Does Chiropractic Treatment Involve?

Chiropractic treatment should only be performed by a qualified chiropractor who has completed four years of pre-medical undergraduate study and a further four to five years of study at an accredited chiropractic college. The criteria for accreditation is that the student has completed a minimum of 4,200 hours in class, laboratory, and clinical experience.

The treatment you can expect from your health professional includes an initial assessment of your needs and an estimate of how many treatment sessions you may need. During the sessions, the chiropractor will manipulate your joints, often but not always, in your spine to restore functionality.

Chiropractors treat a variety of ailments, both in private practice and in hospitals. Chiropractors help with:

  • Disorders of the musculoskeletal system
  • Injuries involving muscles, ligaments and joints
  • Back and neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Diet, nutrition, occupational and lifestyle advice

Is the Safety of Chiropractic Care Guaranteed?

Our team at ChiroConcepts of McKinney believe your safety is the most important aspect of your treatment. Although there is always risk involved with any medical procedure, the risks associated with chiropractic treatment are minimal

Patients often report a reduction in pain almost immediately after receiving treatment, but some may experience slight pain or discomfit afterwards. This usually disappears within 24 hours.

Approximately one patient in every 5.85 million may experience a stroke, or vertebral artery dissection, but your chances of this occurring are more likely in other situations, such as car accidents.

A minor risk of gastrointestinal bleeding is involved with taking painkillers such as Ibuprofen, so we advise patients to follow the recommended procedures while taking these.

How Can I Increase My Level of Safety While Receiving Chiropractic Treatment?

The best way to reduce the minimal risk involved with chiropractic care is to ensure your doctor and chiropractor are both aware of all your symptoms. They should also know of any medication you are taking and of any other conditions you may have.

In some cases, when spinal manipulation is not possible, your chiropractor may recommend other treatments such as soft-tissue techniques, joint mobilization, or therapeutic exercise.

The safety of chiropractic techniques and treatments is taken very seriously by our staff so please don’t hesitate to ask us any questions if you have any further concerns.
