Finding the Most Effective Neck Pain Treatment for Text Neck

Written By ChiroConcepts of McKinney on February 12, 2018

Smartphones and other electronic devices could, quite literally, be a pain in the neck.

According to a new study conducted in the U.S., our extensive use of phones, laptops, and other handheld devices is creating a health epidemic that may even damage our spinal health – permanently.

Dr. Kenneth Hansraj, the surgeon who conducted the study, suggested that, when we’re staring at our phones, we’re adopting an unhealthy posture. This places our necks under excessive amounts of stress, may cause wear and tear, and may even require surgery to fix it.

Why Do More of Us Need Neck Pain Treatment?

In the research paper, Hansraj explained that the weight we’re placing on our necks increases the more we tilt our heads forward to look at our devices. On average, your head weighs around 10-12lb, but when your head’s at a 30-degree angle, this increases to 40lb. Move it even further to 60 degrees, though, and your head can weigh as much as 60lb!

And with smartphone users now spending up to four hours a day in this drooped-head position, Hansraj suggests this could be putting 700 to 1,400 hours of extra stress on our spine.

Over time, this can cause a variety of symptoms – and not just an uncomfortable, tight, painful sensation in your neck, back, and shoulders. As the condition takes hold, you may even start to experience shooting pains or numbness in your arms and headaches.

To avoid this, it’s highly recommended to avoid extensive cell phone usage, maintain your correct posture as much as possible, and take regular breaks from your desk at work. Visiting your chiropractor in McKinney can help immeasurably, too.

Curing Your Text Neck

Due to how “normal” it is to use cell phones and other devices on a daily basis, it’s often difficult to break out of the habit. That’s why many chiropractors offer a tailored treatment plan, which not only includes things like massage therapy, but also provides you with specialized exercises and lifestyle adjustments you can make at home.

Combining your chiropractor’s expertise with your own posture improvements and exercises should help eradicate those painful text neck symptoms in no time. And, as you’re now aware how you can correct your posture, this will prevent text neck from rearing its ugly head in the future.
